Character Info

◎ Character's Name: Enzo Matrix - answers to just "Matrix"
◎ Character's Canon: Reboot
◎ Character's Age: Vaguely somewhere around early 20s, but sprite aging is very weird. He aged faster than he should have due to his time in the games.
◎ Canon Point: Between the episodes "Number 7" and "The Episode With No Name".
◎ Background/History: On the Wiki
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? He's not explicitly a hacker, but most characters within Reboot have some level of hacking ability. This is because they are characters who live in a digital world and interact with codes on a daily basis. He also technically has a Guardian icon, which gives him more potential as a hacker, and he does have the Key Tool named Glitch which could be very helpful for hacking purposes, although Glitch is damaged at this canon point and not fully functional. Within the digital world, Matrix is still capable of doing things like locating viruses and scanning systems.

◎ Personality:

Enzo Matrix used to be an innocent, optimistic and energetic young sprite, when he was the equivalent of a child. He approaches many things in a light-hearted manner, and he admired his older sister Dot, and he hero-worshipped the local guardian, Bob. However, Enzo's innocence was chipped away by a series of events that started with Megabyte casting Bob out into the Web. This left them without a trained Guardian and Enzo without a best friend. Enzo had been given a Guardian icon the last time he met Bob, so he was forced to step up the the responsibility of protecting Mainframe while coping with Bob's absence. Things only became worse when he and AndrAI ended up losing a game. The only way for them to survive at that point was to convert their icons into game sprite form so that they could leave with the game. This caused them to spend the equivalent of years trapped in games (where time moves faster) and moving from system to system without any sign of a way back home to Mainframe.

These factors have all helped to shape Matrix's personality into almost the exact opposite of the way he was as a child. He is a very gruff and reserved person with a quick temper who often displays a jaded outlook on things. At times, his communication is as simple as grunting. He can still act friendly towards others and can often act like a 'cool big brother' type, but he can also form irrational grudges against others (such as Ray Tracer, who he was ready to leave to die before he even knew who he was). He no longer considers himself to be a Guardian, despite still having a Guardian code, and he instead refers to himself as a Renegade who has no format. As he's grown very distant from the child he once was, this has also caused him to grow insecure about it. He is often embarrassed or angered at being compared to his younger self, and that is one reason why he has come to insist on being called 'Matrix' instead of 'Enzo'. This is partly due to how he feels ashamed of how weak he used to be, and he takes shelter within the strength that he has gained from his time fighting in the games. At the same time, he seems to be ashamed of what he's become and how far he's grown from the ideals he had as a child. This extends into insecurities that he displays regarding Bob and Dot, as he's afraid that they will not accept him if they meet again because of how much he's changed. One nightmare even implies that he's afraid of becoming like a virus in his quest to destroy them. However, he has not changed as entirely as he tends to claim. He still has some of his hope, and occasionally displays hints of his old sense of humor. At a later point, he even joyously exclaims "Alphanumeric!" at a chance to return home, a childhood catchphrase that he seemed to have disowned. There's essentially enough there that AndrAIa can still recognize him as Enzo above all.

A strong aspect of the way that Matrix has changed is that he has become a very violent person. When he lost that one game as a child, it was a traumatizing experience in many ways: he had let down the people he was protecting, he had lost his eye and he had nearly cost himself, AndrAIa and Frisket to lose their lives. Life in the games and in other systems can be tough and rigorous, so that is why Enzo had to become stronger over the years and to do what he could to survive. So, he came to embrace violence, becoming very muscular as he compiled and wielding a specially-enhanced gun named Gun as his primary weapon. Matrix can be quite trigger-happy and is known to employ a "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality or generally use brute force as a simple problem-solving method, unless AndrAIa manages to convince him to hold back. He has particularly developed an intense grudge against viruses, and it's practically part of his personal code that he will kill any viruses he sees as soon as possible, without mercy. It is seen in later canon that this is so deeply engrained in Matrix that not even Bob and his theories about reforming viruses can sway him from employing the tactics that he deems necessary, although he does at one point spare Megabyte due to not thinking that he's worth it. He does still display some measures of morality, as he will only destroy drones which possess personality chips. Later canon also shows that Matrix has some difficulty adjusting to a 'normal' life, as one of the first things he does after the crisis's end is set up a scenario where he and a group of binomes play around in shooting at each other with live ammunition. In general, Matrix can be quite jumpy even in innocent situations, due to instincts that have been bred from having to deal with the constant conflict within the games.

Despite his impulsive nature, Matrix can still quite smart when he stops and thinks. He's very savvy about the nature of games and of viruses, and he is very capable of making clever plans. At the same time, it's likely that he's made it this far primarily because he is not truly alone. Throughout his time in the games, he's had only two steadfast companions: AndrAIa and his pet dog Frisket. As they've gone on this journey, Matrix and AndrAIa have formed a strong bond that has helped them to act as an efficient problem-solving team. AndrAIa often helps to keep Matrix's anger and trigger-happiness in check, and she also tends to act as the 'good cop' in dealing with others. In some cases, Matrix purposely acts mean simply to fulfill a role similar to a 'bad cop' in order to motivate others to do things such as volunteer for training. AndrAIa is the one who can usually tell whether or not Matrix's behavior is genuine. The two are great at seeing through each other, but they still don't always get along. They can argue over the right thing to do, and sometimes they will take separate sides as they purse different angles of a problem, but they always end up returning to each other. Matrix also has a bit of a jealous streak that shows itself sometimes. Still, as a team, the two of them have looked out for others as they've sought their way back home. Matrix and AndrAIa both seem to employ the 'teach a man to fish' mentality in helping the downtrodden people they come across in other systems. Even though he claims to have abandoned his role as Guardian, Matrix still wants to help others, and so they do so by teaching the people they meet how to defend themselves and survive without people like the two of them. Despite the hardships they've encountered, they mutually express that they have no regrets about what they did to survive.

At the time of his canon point, Matrix has just faced a struggle involving who he is and what motivates him. This was reflected in his dream by different visions of what 'Number 1' was to him. One vision was of himself as Megabyte, which reflected a drive comprised entirely of hatred that would consume him. Another was a vision of himself, which reflected the idea that he was getting by just by looking out for himself above all. But he denied both of these visions and instead faced a different version of "Number 1": the boy he left behind. He struggled to come to terms with his feelings about his younger self, and he ultimately came out of the dream with a renewed motivation to find Mainframe and to return home, against all odds. Despite how jaded he had become, it seems that he was able to find hope to motivate himself.

◎ Powers/Abilities:

Matrix is very physically strong, having built up a muscular physique during his time in the games. His strength is primarily shown in that not only is he able to match the powerful virus Megabyte in hand-to-hand combat, Matrix is even able to dent the virus's armor-like skin with one of his punches. Beyond that, his special skills are primarily connected to shooting things. He lost an eye when he was defeated as a child, and that eye was replaced by a special optical implant which has special analytical vision that is connected to his Gun. The eye is even capable of telescopic sight. Matrix is a skilled marksman in general, and between his implant and the special capabilities of Gun, he is essentially guaranteed to hit his targets. He's also shown some skill with piloting a variety of vehicles (something that is likely built up through a variety of games), and as a child he even built his own hover-car. He has also shown situational skills and can improvise in adapting to using other weapons (such as when he wields AndrAIa's trident against Megabyte).

Because he has a Guardian icon, Matrix is more advanced than other sprites. The complex code of the Guardians protects him from most infections and also offers limited protection against the harsh environment of the Web. One more superficial ability is the ability to 'reboot' into a setting double-tapping his icon. Rebooting simply involves changing one's physical appearance so that he can fit in with a particular game.

◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory:

1. Gun - an advanced blaster gun with an AI that Matrix wields. It is linked to Matrix's eye implant and can be used without being held. Gun can float in the air, lock onto multiple targets and responds to Matrix's voice commands.
2. Frisket - A loyal dog who has accompanied Enzo/Matrix since he was a child. Frisket is known for sniffing out viruses and having a super-strong bite.
3. His icon
4. A zip board
5. Glitch - Bob's former key tool which was broken during his defeat. It was originally capable of performing a wide variety of functions, but in its current state it can only provide information basic information on games and system scans.
